Shopify Migration

Move to Shopify without losing the catalogue, the customers or the rankings.

Products are the easy part of a migration. Redirects, customer accounts, order history, metafields and the parts of the old theme the store depends on decide whether the move goes well. I plan those first, move everything onto a preview store, and switch over once it all checks out.

WooCommerce to Shopify migration, illustrated
Redirects, customers and order history decide a migration. From my post on moving from WooCommerce.

What's included

  • Products, variants, images, collections, metafields and metaobjects moved with nothing dropped.
  • Customers and order history carried across where the old platform allows it.
  • A 301 redirect for every old URL, so rankings and bookmarks survive.
  • The old theme's features rebuilt on Shopify: custom sections, campaign pages, the pieces the store runs on.
  • A preview store to check everything before the switch, and the switch itself without downtime.
  • Apps, payments and couriers set up on the new store.

Who it's for

  • Stores on WooCommerce, WordPress or a custom build moving to Shopify.
  • Shopify stores changing theme, or moving catalogue between stores and markets.
  • Brands whose catalogue lives in a spreadsheet or an ERP and needs to land in Shopify cleanly.

How I work

Four steps, from the first call to launch.

  1. 01

    Call

A short call to understand the store, the goal and the deadline.

  2. 02

    Plan

A written scope: what I'll build, in what order, and what I need from you.

  3. 03

    Build

Work ships in small steps on a preview theme, so you see progress as it happens.

  4. 04

    Launch

Go live, check everything on the live store, and hand over — with support after launch.

What you can count on

  • You talk to the person writing the code
  • A written scope before any build
  • Work ships in small, visible steps
  • Preview before anything goes live
  • Support after launch

Questions

What can be moved from WooCommerce to Shopify?

Products, variants, images, collections, customers and order history, through Shopify's importer, CSV files or an app. What can't move is customer passwords, which no platform exports; customers set a new one the first time they log in, and I write that into the launch emails.

Will I lose my Google rankings?

Not if every old URL redirects to its new one. I map the old product, collection and page URLs to their Shopify equivalents before launch, set the 301 redirects, submit the new sitemap, and check Search Console in the weeks after.

How long does a migration take?

It depends on the catalogue and what the old theme did. A few hundred products with standard pages is a couple of weeks; a large catalogue with custom features is longer. The timeline and a fixed price are agreed in the written scope before anything moves.

Can you move one Shopify store to another, or just change the theme?

Yes. For Balqees I launched the Saudi store from the main store's catalogue: 184 metaobject entries and 1,261 product metafields across 78 products with no dropped references. For Zero Lifestyle I worked on the move from Dawn to the Focal theme, carrying the custom sections and campaign pages across.
